Moving Out Checklist: What to Do Before Handing Back the Keys
8 min read · 10 Ten Cleans Editorial Team

The final week of a tenancy is when things get chaotic. Packing, forwarding post, cancelling utilities, and coordinating the handback all happen at once — and cleaning is the task that gets squeezed, rushed, or forgotten. This checklist walks through the full moving-out process, so nothing slips and your deposit comes back in full.
Two weeks before
- Give notice in writing — confirm your notice period and last day with your landlord or letting agent.
- Book your end of tenancy clean — the earlier you book, the more likely you are to get your preferred date and time. A guaranteed clean is your strongest defence against a deposit dispute.
- Arrange removals or a van — book transport for your belongings before the clean, so the property is empty when the cleaners arrive.
- Start using up food — work through the fridge and freezer so there is less to move and less to clean out.
One week before
- Begin packing — pack everything you will not need in the final week, and declutter as you go.
- Arrange utility meter readings — take photos of your final readings on the day you leave, and notify your suppliers.
- Redirect your post — set up a Royal Mail redirect to your new address. It is cheap insurance against missed bills and identity documents.
- Confirm the handback — confirm the time, location, and key return process with your letting agent.
Two days before
- Finish packing — everything except essentials for the last night.
- Defrost the fridge and freezer — switch them off, leave the doors open, and put towels down.
- Take your pre-clean photos — photograph every room before the cleaners arrive, especially any existing damage.
The day of the clean
- Remove all belongings — the property must be empty for a proper end of tenancy clean. Every box left behind is a surface that goes uncleaned.
- Clear access — pull freestanding appliances away from the wall where safe, and make sure the cleaner can reach behind the toilet, the bath panel, and all cupboards.
- Leave keys, parking, and access details — confirm the cleaner can get in and park. A cleaner who cannot park is a cleaner who cannot clean.
- Take your post-clean photos — photograph every room after the clean, as your record of the property's condition at handback.
Handback day
- Take final meter readings and submit them to your suppliers.
- Return all keys — including any spares, garage keys, and fobs. Missing keys are a common deduction.
- Be present for the check-out inventory if you can — it is harder to dispute a claim you were not there to witness.
After you leave
- Chase your deposit — your landlord must return it within 10 days of agreeing the amount. If they delay or dispute, raise a claim with your deposit protection scheme.
- Keep your evidence — your clean receipt, your photos, and your check-in inventory are your defence if a dispute goes to adjudication.
