How to Prepare for an End of Tenancy Clean (So Nothing Gets Missed)

You have booked an end of tenancy clean — good move. But what you do before the cleaners arrive matters almost as much as the clean itself. A prepared property is faster to clean, more thorough, and far less likely to result in a deposit dispute. Here is how to get ready.
Remove all belongings
The single most important step. Cleaners cannot clean what they cannot see or reach. Every box, bag, and piece of furniture left behind is a surface that goes uncleaned — and a gap an inventory clerk will note. Aim for the property to be completely empty, or as close to it as possible.
Defrost the fridge and freezer
Switch them off at least 24 hours before the clean, leave the doors open, and put towels down to catch the water. A cleaner cannot properly clean a freezer that is still frozen, and a defrosted appliance is one of the first things a clerk checks.
Clear access to the key areas
Pull freestanding appliances away from the wall where you safely can, and make sure the cleaner can reach behind the toilet, the bath panel, and the inside of all cupboards. If something is locked or blocked, leave a note.
Take your own photos
Before the clean, photograph every room — especially any existing damage. After the clean, photograph them again. This gives you a clear record of the property's condition at handback, which is invaluable if a dispute arises.
Leave the keys, the parking, and the access details
If the cleaner is collecting keys from a neighbour or a letting agent, confirm the arrangement the day before. If the property has permit-only parking, arrange a space — a cleaner who cannot park is a cleaner who cannot clean.
What you do not need to do
You do not need to pre-clean. That is what you are paying for. A quick tidy and the steps above are all the preparation that is needed — leave the deep work to the professionals.
