How to Keep Your Bathroom Mould-Free This Winter

Winter is mould season in the British bathroom. Cold external walls meet warm, steamy showers, and condensation sits on surfaces long enough for mould to take hold in the grout, on the sealant, and in the corners of the ceiling. The good news is that mould is almost entirely preventable with the right habits and a periodic deep clean.

Ventilation is the first defence

Run the extractor fan for at least ten minutes after every shower, and open a window when you can. If your bathroom has no fan, a dehumidifier or a window left ajar for half an hour makes a measurable difference.

Squeegee after every shower

A quick squeegee of the glass and tiles removes the water that would otherwise sit and feed mould. It takes thirty seconds and is the single most effective daily habit.

Treat grout and sealant early

Mould in grout starts as pink discolouration and turns black if left. A dedicated mould spray left to dwell, then agitated, lifts it before it sets into the silicone. Once mould is deep in the sealant, the only fix is to remove and re-seal.

The role of a deep clean

A periodic deep clean descales the showerhead, treats the grout, and reaches the ceiling corners and behind the fittings where mould hides. Booked every few months through winter, it keeps the bathroom hygienic and stops the slow spread that daily wiping cannot reach.
